For Emergency Responders

We share a common goal with emergency responders, and that is the safety of those who live and work along our pipeline systems. We are committed to providing you with the information and training you need to protect people and property in the event of a pipeline emergency. It's important for all emergency responders along our pipeline rights-of-way to:

Most importantly, you should understand how to handle a call from the public reporting a pipeline emergency and how we will work with local emergency responders in the unlikely event of a pipeline emergency. We encourage you to read our public awareness brochure, which will give you specific information pertaining to pipeline safety and your role as an emergency responder.

Maps, markers and other resources should never be used to find the exact location of a pipeline. Always call 811 before you dig.

Online Pipeline Safety Training for Emergency Officials

NEXUS is proud to offer emergency officials in our areas of operation with free, unlimited access to online pipeline emergency response training.

The training portal is among the many initiatives the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the Association of Oil Pipe Lines (AOPL), together with supporting emergency response organizations, have created to assist first responders to learn the techniques and skills to address a hazardous liquid or natural gas pipeline incident. Using the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) “Pipeline Emergencies” Program, this best in class online training is provided free-of-charge to all first responders. For 911 dispatchers, the awareness course is recommend by NEXUS Emergency Management to provide information about hazards and proper response.

Training participants are able to select the training program that best suits their needs, including the following levels:

  • Awareness (Introduction)
  • Operations (Intermediate)
  • Technician (Comprehensive)

Access the training registration page and associated modules here.

It is important to note that any response to a pipeline emergency must be done in accordance with individual agency protocols.

We also conduct regular emergency exercises with our local emergency response departments. Additionally, we work with other pipeline companies to host awareness meetings for emergency officials and others. Contact us to find out more about our educational and training opportunities for emergency responders.
